Fire Ants in Pasco County, FL: How to Get Rid of Them for Good
# Fire Ants in Pasco County, FL: How to Get Rid of Them for Good
Fire ants are a year-round problem across Pasco County. Whether you are in Hudson, New Port Richey, Wesley Chapel, or Spring Hill, the warm Florida climate means fire ant colonies are active in your lawn, garden, and around your home foundation almost every month of the year.
If you have tried hardware store granules and keep seeing new mounds pop up, you are not alone. Consumer-grade products are not formulated to provide the residual control that professional products deliver.
Why Fire Ants Are So Hard to Control in Florida
Florida sandy soils and warm temperatures allow fire ant colonies to grow large and spread quickly. A single colony can contain 200,000 to 500,000 workers and multiple queens. When a colony is disturbed or treated with a contact-kill product, the queens often survive and relocate.
Professional Products That Work
Talstar P or Bifen IT (Bifenthrin)
Bifenthrin is the active ingredient in both Talstar P and Bifen IT. Applied as a broadcast spray or granule treatment across your lawn, bifenthrin provides 30 to 90 days of residual control. It kills foraging fire ants on contact and creates a treated zone that deters new colonies.
Advion Fire Ant Bait
Advion Fire Ant Bait uses indoxacarb in a granular bait format. Workers carry the bait back to the colony and share it with the queen, eliminating the entire colony including queens that would survive a contact treatment.
Combination Approach
For best results, broadcast Talstar Granules for immediate knockdown and residual protection, then apply Advion Fire Ant Bait for colony elimination. This two-step approach is what licensed pest control companies use.
